APPIANO GENTILE – Speaking in an exclusive interview with Mediaset, Hugo Campagnaro revealed how it felt to meet Pope Francis alongside his Argentina team-mates before Wednesday's friendly against Italy. "It was an exciting, unforgettable experience, even more so because he's Argentinean. It was wonderful to have him up there in front of us."
The topic quickly switched to Inter with Campagnaro reflecting on his first month as a Nerazzurri player. "It's been good for me. We're working very hard and that's what matters in pre-season. Now we're about to start playing competitive matches so we really have to pull out all the stops. We still need a bit of time because this is a new group of players and it takes a while to put the coach's ideas into practice. But even in the games we lost – apart from against Valencia – we did good things."
The defender also commented on Inter's need to improve at the back: "Yes, we do need to improve. You always pay for even the slightest mistake in defence. We have to get up to scratch quickly now."
Walter Mazzarri said in a recent interview that he had no regrets about leaving Napoli and joining Inter. Campagnaro was of the same view: "I definitely don't regret anything. I'm pleased with the choice I made. Napoli are putting together a good team, they've signed some good players and I'm happy for them, but my thoughts are only on Inter. It's too early to say who will win the Scudetto and it's still early days to say what Inter's targets for the season can be.
"When will Zanetti return? Knowing how strong he is - mentally speaking too - I think he'll be back in less time than normal."
Campagnaro then confirmed that the team has not been distracted by talk of possible developments regarding Erick Thohir. "We don't talk about things like that. All we're concerned with is our work and trying to carry out what the coach wants of us."
