SAINT LOUIS - Walter Mazzarri spoke to reporters after Inter's friendly defeat to Real Madrid.
Are you disappointed? "Anyone who didn't watch the game might see the 3-0 scoreline and think Real Madrid completely dominated but that's not what happened. Inter fashioned six or seven great chances in front of their keeper. Obviously our finishing could have been better but I'm very happy with the way my team played."
Was it a step forward? "Yes, it was. We carved out lots of openings and a team as good as Real doesn't concede many goals. Let's not forget who the opposition was today. Alvarez, Palacio and Icardi had lots of chances to score and it's incredible that not even one of them went in..."
The coach was then quizzed about Danish youngster Patrick Olsen, who started today's match, and Inter's latest signing Rolando.
"Olsen has plenty of character but he needs to keep his feet on the ground. Sometimes he makes simple errors. Twice we conceded when we got hit on the counter and yet we didn't concede anything when Real tried to build from the back.
"Rolando will bring us experience because given the two injuries we've had at the back, and playing with a three-man defence, Andreolli was the only alternative we had. Rolando was very useful last season [at Napoli] to help us qualify for the Champions League."
Asked if Inter still need to find their playing style, Mazzarri replied: "At least two of our chances could have gone in today. If we'd lost 3-2 to Real Madrid – one of the best teams in the world at the moment – it wouldn't have been so bad."
Can Alvarez become one of the leaders of this Inter side? "The team is the leader but he's taking giant strides forward and I'm pleased with him. The players are starting to get to grips with certain movements and are solid. If you assess the game based on what happened on the pitch and not the result you can't not be happy."
