MILAN - Frank Stella – painter, sculptor, father of minimalism – is a record-setting artist. Born in Boston of Italian ancestry, he is the only living artist who can boast two solo exhibitions at the MoMA in New York, where his story began. In 1959, at only 23 years of age, four of his 'Black Paintings' were included in the 'Sixteen Americans' exhibit of the MoMA.
Here is a passage from a recent interview that Stella gave to Alessandra Farkas of Corriere della Sera. Recalling that first, fundamental recognition at the MoMA, which Stella calls his 'definitive license' and anointment as an artist, here is how he summed up his feelings in those days: "It was like getting signed by Inter; such a prestigious team that would have guaranteed you an international career."
