36' Milito controls a long ball into the area and tries to turn Carvalho but there's no way past the Portuguese defender.
34' Amazing chance for Eto'o. Sneidjer sends in a low cross from the left but Samu uncharacteristically miscues just outside the six-yard box. What a let-off for Chelsea.

32' Lampard goes for goal from 30 yards but his effort is woeful. Goal kick.

23' Another yellow card as Kalou is booked for a clattering foul on Wesley Sneijder.
22' Milito goes on a surging run down the left and gets into the box before going down under a challenge from Carvalho. Gonzalez isn't convinced and he books the Argentine for protesting after having his penalty claim turned down.

19' Drogba fires wide of Julio Cesar's right-hand post from inside the area.
18' Ballack unleashes a terrific shot from 25 yards. Superb block by Julio Cesar.

11' Chelsea on the attack. Nicolas Anelka gets to the left angle of our box and fires a low shot to the right of Julio Cesar. Goal kick.

9' Thiago Motta is booked for a feet high foul on Ballack.
3' GOOOAAALLLL!!!! Thiago Motta plays to Eto'o who serves Diego Milito in the area and El Principe turns Terry and picks his spot before tucking past Cech. What a start, and what a brilliant dummy by Sneijder who let Eto'o's ball roll through to Milito! INTER 1-0 CHELSEA.
1' Good evening and welcome to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, where Inter are set to take on Chelsea (and, according to some, the rest of Italy) in the first leg of the Champions League round of sixteen. Over 78,000 tickets have been sold for tonight's eagerly-awaited clash, generating record gate receipts for the club. The previous record was set last season when we hosted Manchester United.
1' Inter kick off. FORZA NERAZZURRI!
1' The players come back out, the Champions League anthem starts, and the Curva Nord displays a spectacular choreography with the words FORZA RAGAZZI.
1' A huge roar of disapproval now as news comes through that AC Milan have snatched a late winner against Fiorentina in Florence, cutting our Serie A lead to four points.
1' Out come the Blues for the warm-up. They are quickly followed by the Nerazzurri and the stadium erupts, drowning out the Chelsea fans who are up in the third tier.
1' Here's the cast:
Inter: 12 Julio Cesar; 13 Maicon, 6 Lucio, 25 Samuel, 4 Zanetti; 5 Stankovic, 19 Cambiasso, 8 Thiago Motta; 10 Sneijder; 9 Eto'o, 22 Milito.
Subs: 1 Toldo, 2 Cordoba, 7 Quaresma, 11 Muntari, 17 Mariga, 27 Pandev, 45 Balotelli.
Chelsea: 1 Cech; 2 Ivanovic, 6 Carvalho, 26 Terry, 15 Malouda; 13 Ballack, 12 Mikel, 8 Lampard; 39 Anelka, 21 Kalou; 11 Drogba. Subs: 40 Hilario, 10 J.Cole, 23 Sturridge, 33 Alex, 35 Belletti, 43 Bruma, 45 Borini.
1' Inter's Champions League record with tonight's referee Manuel Mejuto Gonzalez is three wins and a defeat. The Spanish official took charge of an epic encounter involving teams from Italy and England - that 2004/05 final in Istanbul when Liverpool beat AC Milan on penalties after coming back from 3-0 down.
1' Our victory over Rubin Kazan in Matchday 6 of the group stages marked the start of a 14-game unbeaten run. We have since consolidated our lead at the top of the Serie A table and reached the Coppa Italia semi-finals. Chelsea, meanwhile, have lost once in their last 16 games since Matchday 6.
1' We met Chelsea at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in the pre-season World Football Challenge tournament last summer, losing 2-0, but tonight is our first ever competitive meeting with the Blues.

No Inter goal in four games against English opposition

Inter haven't scored in a competitive match against an English club since Christian Vieri's 32th-minute goal in the 5-1 Champions League defeat at home to Arsenal on 25 November 2003. The Nerazzurri have since faced English opposition on four occasions in European competitions. In 2007/08 Inter lost 1-0 at home and 2-0 away to Liverpool, drawing 0-0 at home and losing 2-0 away to Manchester United in 2008/09.

Trophy success for Inter after knocking out English teams

When they have knocked out English clubs, Inter have gone on win the European Cup/Champions League. It happened in 1963/64 when the Nerazzurri beat Everton in the first round on their way to a 3-1 final victory over Real Madrid in Vienna, and in 1964/65 when Inter beat Benfica 1-0 in Milan after a semi-final victory over Liverpool. Inter have been eliminated from Europe's top competition by English teams on three occasions, against Liverpool in the last sixteen in 2007/08 and against Manchester United in the quarter-finals in 1998/99 and at the last sixteen stage in 2008/09.

Two goalless draws, two clean sheets for Inter since Parma point

Inter go into the first leg of their Champions League last sixteen tie after 0-0 draws away to Napoli and at home to Sampdoria. Their last goal came in the 1-1 away draw at Parma on 10 February, Balotelli scoring in the 59th minute. The last player to score against Inter was Parma's Bojinov in the 55th minute of that draw at the Tardini.

Nerazzurri unbeaten in 36 home games

Inter haven't lost a home match since their 1-0 Champions League defeat to Panathinaikos on 26 November 2008. They have since played 36 home games, winning 26 and drawing 10. The last time Inter conceded a goal at home was on 28 January when Diego scored in the 10th minute of Juventus' 2-1 Coppa Italia defeat. The Nerazzurri have since kept three clean sheets at home: 1-0 against Fiorentina (Coppa Italia), 3-0 against Cagliari (Serie A) and 0-0 against Sampdoria (Serie A).

Julio Cesar set for milestone appearance

By appearing against Chelsea, Julio Cesar Soares Espindola will make his 200th appearance for Italian clubs (all for Inter). The Brazilian goalkeeper, who made his 'Italian' debut in Inter's 2-0 Champions League win away to Shakhtar Donetsk on 10 August 2005, has played 157 times in Serie A, 5 in the Coppa Italia, 34 in European competitions and 3 in the Italian Super Cup.

Chelsea: only one defeat in last 22 European games, one without conceding in last 16

Inter's last sixteen opponents have lost just one of their last European matches - a 3-1 away defeat to Roma in the Champions League on 4 November 2008. Chelsea have since played 21 Euro games, winning 11 and drawing 10. The Blues have failed to hit the target in only one of their last sixteen European fixtures - a 0-0 draw away to Barcelona on 28 April 2009. The Londoners have scored 27 goals in the other 15 games.

Ancelotti's last away victory against Inter in the Champions League in 2005

In 28 games against Inter, Carlo Ancelotti has registered 15 victories, 5 draws and 8 defeats. His teams have scored in each of their last 11 away matches against the Nerazzurri since the 0-0 draw between Inter and Juventus on 27 February 1999. Ancelotti's last away victory over Inter was on 12 April 2005 when his Milan side were awarded a 3-0 forfeit win the Champions League.

MILAN - Inter hold a slender advantage in their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie against Chelsea as Argentines Diego Milito and Esteban Cambiasso scored either side of Salomon Kalou's goal for a 2-1 victory in Milan.

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza erupted with less than three minutes on the clock as the Nerazzurri bagged an important early goal. Thiago Motta served Eto'o and an instinctive dummy from Sneijder let the ball roll through to Milito, who turned Terry before firing past a hapless Petr Cech.

The visitors unleashed a barrage of attacks as the Nerazzurri defended their early advantage and Didier Drogba went close with a 30-yard free kick that bounced down off the underside of the crossbar.

Julio Cesar didn't look like a man who had been involved in a car crash three days ago and the Inter keeper pulled off brilliant saves Kalou and Ballack before keeping out a far-post header from Drogba.

José Mourinho's men soaked up the pressure and were presented with a golden chance to increase their lead just past the half-hour when Eto'o miscued in front of goal after a low cross from Sneijder, who moments earlier had forced a punched block from Cech with a dangerous inswinging free kick.

Chelsea were level six minutes after the restart when Kalou fired a low shot off Julio Cesar on its way into into the bottom right corner after a strong run by Ivanovic, but the visiting fans' celebrations were short-lived.

Within four minutes, Cambiasso beat Cech with a stunning low strike. Sneijder's cross was headed away by Carvalho and Cambiasso pounced, seeing his first shot blocked by Terry before crashing home the rebound to put the Nerazzurri deservedly back in front.

Chelsea played the last thirty minutes with Hilario between the posts after Cech was forced off injured, but the Portuguese custodian had hardly a save to make as the Nerazzurri couldn't capitalise on their counter-attacking initiative.

Instead, Julio Cesar had more work to do and he made a crucial save from Lampard's close-range effort from Drogba's cross to protect Inter's lead ahead of next month's return leg at Stamford Bridge.
