MILAN - "I came to Inter to win, to give my best, putting my heart and soul into it on and off the pitch." Diego Godin is clear about what he wants to do after the 33-year-old Uruguayan defender signed a contract with Inter running until 2022. On the day of his official announcement, he spoke to Inter TV. "For me, a new challenge and a new experience is set to start. Inter are a great team and one of the biggest clubs in Europe. I have a real desire to keep competing at the highest level, to keep giving my all on and off the pitch to help this great team achieve big things."

Ahead of joining the Nerazzurri, fellow Uruguayans Alvaro Recoba and Matias Vecino offered Godin some advice: "I spoke to both of them, especially with Matias, who is an international teammate of mine. He spoke very well of the team, the city and, above all, the ambitions and objectives of the club for the coming seasons. I really want to get started and it’s very important for me to already have a friend in the changing room, he’ll certainly help me get to know my new teammates."

After his experiences in Uruguay and Spain, Godin is set to embark on an adventure in Italian football: "It’s an experience I’ll get to know by playing, but the football played here is something I’ve followed since I was young given that Italian football is watched a lot in Uruguay. I have a lot of expectations and enthusiasm. I can’t wait, Serie A is an attractive prospect and it’ll be a great challenge. I come here with a great amount of desire and this will certainly help make everything even better. I’ll try to give my all both on and off the pitch in order to help the team and my teammates.

"I chose Inter because it’s a fantastic club with a great team and a lot of history. The Club is extremely ambitious and wants to achieve big targets. I’ll try to make my own contribution and give all that I can both on and off the pitch. I’ll look to help my teammates and help the Club achieve important aims. I chose Inter because there’s an ambitious sports project in place, there’s the desire to get back to winning and this is a great Club both in Europe and on a global scale."
