UYL, PSV EINDHOVEN 2-1 INTER

A Colidio goal wasn't enough for the Nerazzurri in the second Group B fixture in the UEFA Youth League as PSV came back through Piroe and Vertessen

EINDHOVEN - Following the unfortunate draw against Tottenham Hotspur in the opening fixture, Armando Madonna’s Under-19s suffered an incredible defeat on matchday two of the UEFA Youth League. At the Sportcomplex de Herdgang in Eindhoven, a goal from Facundo Colidio in the 24th minute put the Nerazzurri ahead before PSV came back to win with late goals from Piroe (86’) and Vertessen (93’)

The home side started well and caused issues for Dekic in the third minute. From the edge of the area, Piroe withstood pressure from Van den Eynden and Colombini before hitting the bar with a left-foot effort. Five minutes later, something similar happened as Sidibe came inside and shot on target but Dekic saved.

After Ihattaren narrowly missed, Inter responded and got forward with interplay between Colidio and Gavioli. The Argentine crossed for Gavioli who flicked it on first-time but without finding the target. Madonna’s side got higher up the pitch and Schirò forced the Dutch goalkeeper to do well to come off his line and win the ball down low.

After 20 minutes, the match burst into life. Dekic saved from Ihattaren before Colidio headed home from a Pompetti corner. It was the second goal in as many UEFA Youth League appearances for the Argentine forward. In the final 15 minutes of the half, the tempo dropped but both sides still had further chances. PSV kept Dekic busy with a Piroe shot while Zappa tried his luck with a right-foot effort from outside the box.

Inter controlled the match in the first ten minutes after half-time, but PSV never caved in and avoided conceding a second goal. After an hour had gone, the home side then started to really up the pressure in their search for an equaliser, with Ihattaren and Vertessen proving to be particularly dangerous. Inter only retained their one-goal advantage thanks to an impressive Dekic and poor finishing by the Dutch team. Despite this, the Nerazzurri were continuing to control the ball well, although they weren’t quite able to find that bit of creativity needed in the final third to put the result beyond doubt.

Just when Inter seemed to be heading for the win, PSV stepped up their game once again and, after having hit the post through Vertessen, managed to draw level. Similar to Colidio’s goal for Inter, Piroe headed home from a corner. And when Inter were trying to recover from this setback, disaster struck again for Madonna’s team: naive defending led to Vertessen scoring to complete the comeback for Van Nistelrooy’s side. It therefore finished 2-1 to PSV.
