Being able to play and study is one of the primary objectives of the Inter Campus Project. A connection is made between the two in order to promote literacy, something which, as stated in the Declaration of Persepolis, is "not just the process of learning the skills of reading, writing and arithmetic, but a contribution to the liberation of man and to his full development. Literacy creates the conditions for the acquisition of a critical consciousness in relation to society, stimulates initiative to create projects capable of acting upon the world and transforming it, and thus provides the skills to experience human relationships."
On the one hand, the ‘pact’ between the child and Inter Campus sees a commitment made to every child who would otherwise be denied the opportunity to play. On the other hand, every child makes the following commitment in front of their peers and coaches: to go to school and study and to grow up and become great people.
This is a combination that has produced – and continues to produce – positive results, with many countries serving as evidence for this. One such example is Uganda, where the project, set up to promote literacy and health protection, involves almost 900 children and provides the catalyst for the children to attend the St Joseph Primary School in Nagalama. These are children whose parents often want them to work on fields instead of studying.
Another example is Cambodia, where in the village of Roong, about 40 km from the capital Phnom Penh, hundreds of children now attend the primary and secondary school built by the association Mission Possible Onlus and take part in Inter Campus sports and educational activities. Before Mission Possible Onlus arrived, these children did not study because no school was in reach.
Even in Brazil, more specifically Sao Paulo, the children can’t get away without making this commitment. If they fail to turn up three times, they are warned and benched. This is until they earn their place on the field again by achieving top marks on their report card!
