Silao - The third and final leg of our July Inter Campus tour recently took place just a few hours away from Queretaro. Despite finding ourselves in full rainy season, the blue sky was out and there was plenty of glorious sunshine. However, occasionally, the clouds would drift over and we’d be treated to an unexpected blast of rain. We were in the Bajio region, specifically in the industrial town of Silao in the state of Guanajuato. Crime is a real issue here, while the majority of inhabitants work in the gigantic factories that provide goods destined for the ‘first world’ – the United States. It is here where Inter Campus and the Peter Pan Foundation, with the support of Pirelli Mexico, work together to manage a project for 130 kids from disadvantaged backgrounds. They play together with the children of employees from the local tyre factories.
A number of training sessions were conducted during our visit, with local coaches also holding theory lessons in the classroom. There was also the usual meeting with parents, where the Inter Campus staff explained the educational aim of the project and answered any questions. This is a fixed appointment that represents an important tool in making the project even more effective within the community.
At the end of our visit was the classic tournament with all the kids taking part. It was a morning of sport and celebrations, with CEO of Pirelli Mexico, Tom Gravalos, on hand to make to a heartfelt speech to all present. The Pirelli representative watched the tournament with great enthusiasm before personally handing out Inter Campus certificates to those who children who are leaving. There was also plenty of gratitude from the parents, as they thanked the staff for the years of education that helped their children grow.
