GENOA – Luciano Spalletti's Inter outfit suffered their third defeat of the season as they went down 2-0 to Genoa at the Stadio Ferraris. The match was decided by an unfortunate own goal from Ranocchia and a strike from former Inter favourite Goran Pandev. The Nerazzurri therefore stay stuck on 48 points after 25 league matches.
The hosts started the game on the front foot. After nine minutes, Pandev's solo effort saw him break into the Inter penalty area and shoot right-footed from a tight angle, forcing Handanovic to save with his feet. Two minutes later, the Nerazzurri stopper misjudged an early cross from the Macedonian which landed in the six-yard box and bounced up onto the crossbar. Inter had their first meaningful attack after 19 minutes. Candreva drove forward down the left and crossed for Karamoh who volleyed wide from a good position. Luciano Spalletti's men were in the ascendancy as the first half reached its mid-way point and Perin had to be at his best on 31 minutes to keep out Candreva's powerful right-footed shot from the edge of the box. Unfortunately, just seconds before referee Fabbri blew for half time, Genoa took the lead thanks to a calamitous own goal. Skriniar tried to clear Zukanovic's cross but the ball instead struck Ranocchia and wrong-footed Handanovic. The teams therefore headed in at the break with the Ligurians 1-0 up.
In the second half, Inter looked to pose a threat with some good play from Cancelo when his teasing cross to the far post was put behind for a corner by Rosi. It was then Genoa who found the net again. In the 59th minute, Laxalt fired a low shot from the edge of the box that was controlled inside the area by Pandev and the Macedonian beat Handanovic with an unstoppable left-foot shot. Spalletti sent Rafinha on for Vecino and Candreva tried his luck soon after but Perin made the save on the dive. Two minutes later, Karamoh got away from Omeonga before firing with his left on the edge of the box but it went off target. In the final quarter of an hour, Spalletti brought on Brozovic and Pinamonti. The Nerazzurri had a great chance in the 78th minute when Eder’s effort was cleared off the line by Zukanovic. Genoa responded with two efforts from the substitute Lapadula and Zukanovic with both going over. Inter kept pushing with two chances in the 88th minute after some confusion in the Genoa box but neither Pinamonti or Karamoh were able to apply the finish. In the first minute of the four added on, D’Ambrosio collected the ball at the far post from another Cancelo cross but Perin saved down low. Despite the late push, there was no change to the scoreline and Genoa won 2-0.
