PIOLI: "JINDONG ZHANG’S PRESENCE A MASSIVE BOOST"

The Nerazzurri boss spoke to Mediaset Premium ahead of Inter’s crunch match against Roma at San Siro on Sunday night

APPIANO GENTILEStefano Pioli revealed that the whole Inter squad had been boosted by the arrival of Jindong Zhang ahead of the visit of Roma to San Siro on Sunday night.

Speaking to Mediaset Premium on Friday, the Nerazzurri boss admitted the clash was a vital one in his side’s chase for Champions League qualification.

"I wouldn’t call it a tie breaker, because that’s usually when two teams are on equal points. We’re chasing and we know that these matches are worth even more," said Pioli.

"When you speak with a person [like Jindong Zhang] who talks profoundly about team spirit, desire and positivity, it really rubs off. Those are important concepts for a team. His presence gives us a massive boost. The owners want to improve the squad even further by investing smartly," he continued.

The match will see club captain Mauro Icardi return following his suspension.

"He’s a top player and will be a big help, although those that came in did well," said Pioli. "He’s full of desire and determination. Aside from his goals, he’s a vital player in terms of his movement and the space he creates. He’s our captain."

One player Pioli will be without is Brazilian defender Miranda, who misses the game through suspension.

"I didn’t take too much notice of what happened in Bologna because I was focused on winning," explained the coach. "It’s clear that we’re talking about a great defender, but we have a big squad and whoever comes in will be ready."
