APPIANO GENTILE – Andreas Brehme is the guest on this week's episode of Memorabilia, which goes out this evening at 21:00 CET.
During his time at the club, the German legend won the record-breaking Scudetto, the Super Cup the following year and the UEFA Cup in 1990/91.
"I was at Inter for four years," Brehme recalled, "but the club forever has a place in my heart.
"Inter hadn't won the title for ten years, but we had a fantastic season with an exceptional team. There were Italy players like Nicola Berti and Alessandro Bianchi, plus me and Lothar Matthaus. Then you had Giovanni Trapattoni, the best coach you could wish for. He's won practically everything in his career and I was his assistant at Stuttgart.
"I worked hard on both my feet," the former defender continued. "This is an important lesson for young players. It's vital to be well-rounded."
The pinnacle of Brehme's career was at Italy 1990 when he scored goals in the quarters, semis and then final to help West Germany lift the World Cup trophy.
"When I joined in 1988, we won the Scudetto that season. We played pretty well the following year as well, but Napoli deserved to win after a great campaign. It was almost like playing at home in 1990, when we had our derby game against the Dutch with their AC Milan players at San Siro. We could hear the cheers from the Inter fans when we played at the Meazza."
