MILAN – Stefano Vecchi was visibly chuffed after securing his first win as a coach in Serie A and expressed his gratitude to the Nerazzurri squad for their willingness to take his ideas on board.
"My coaching staff and I set ourselves the aim of performing well in these two games and helping out the club," the Primavera boss said after full-time. "We were flattered to have been asked to step in. We were inches away from getting the result in England and we were inches away from letting it slip by us today, despite the fact we were completely dominant.
"Perhaps we were a bit short in what is usually our biggest strength, i.e. quality in attack," he added, analysing today's contest. "The result was nevertheless more than fair. We didn't give Crotone anything, even though we were constantly flooding forwards."
Asked what lies in the future, both for himself and Inter as a whole, Vecchi had this to say: "Now I'll go back to my boys in order to help them grow and try to achieve success with the Primavera. What advice can I give to my successor? Nothing, I was just pleased that the players accepted me and my team with complete trust."
The interim coach then moved on to assess the standout performers against Crotone and what he has tried to bring to the table during his time in charge of the first team.
"I was really pleased with Marcelo Brozovic. He worked himself into the ground and fought for his team-mates. In these two games, we tried to play with two compact banks of four. The goals we conceded against Southampton were hard to prepare for in training.
"We worked on the players' approach before the Europa League fixture and it came in handy today as well. Therefore, I'd like to thank the players for putting faith in us; they knew that with the quality they have up front something had to happen."
