BERGAMO – Frank de Boer admitted he was disappointed with Inter’s first-half display at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia on Sunday as the Nerazzurri slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Atalanta.
"We know it’s always tough at Atalanta but we gave the first half away – we didn’t play, only Atalanta did," began De Boer, speaking after the final whistle. "We spoke at half time and then we improved after the break, but we can’t keep starting like we did."
De Boer acknowledged that Inter's current form was unacceptable, but insisted his side would improve.
"Three defeats in a row is not good enough for a great club like Inter, but I’ve seen that the team can get a lot better. We were close to getting a second goal today and only lost because of a lapse in concentration.
"More than anything I’m disappointed about the first part of the game – we played with fear. In the second half I saw the Inter I want to see, but we lacked luck when it came down to the finer details. We saw two sides of the team today.
"Since the Juventus game, we’ve played well at times but that’s forgotten when the results aren’t good. We’ve made progress but it’s tough when the points don’t come with it. Right now we need a win for the team’s morale."
The Dutchman was forced to defend his team selection after Ever Banega and Antonio Candreva were left out for the trip to Atalanta.
"We have great players in our squad and I can only pick 11. You have to accept the situation. I always choose what I think is the best team," explained De Boer. "The only way to come through this is by working hard and speaking with the players to understand how we can change things."
Finally, De Boer was bullish when asked about his relationship with the Nerazzurri owners.
"The managerial team is always in Appiano Gentile. President Thohir and Suning aren’t in Italy but they are right behind the team. I feel the club’s confidence in me but we need a win to turn things around. I want to see a confident team."
