NEW JERSEY – A very special game at Red Bull Arena was kicked off by Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday night.
The United Nations secretary-general was welcomed on the pitch by Inter president Erick Thohir, board members Steven Zhang and Ren Jun, and deputy permanent representative of Italy to the United Nations Inigo Lambertini.
Ban Ki-moon was given an Inter shirt with his name on it and immediately pulled it on, before greeting all the players individually and receiving applause from the crowd.
The appearance of such a prestigious figure as Ban Ki-moon at the friendly match with Estudiantes is further recognition of the social work carried out by Inter Campus with boys and girls around the world.
UNOSDP (United Nations Office on Sport for Peace and Development) and UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) are just two of the many organisations Inter Campus has worked with over the years.
Children from Inter Campus USA were also at the game and had the opportunity to enter the pitch with the players before kick-off and greet the crowd during a lap of honour.
These kids are a concrete example of how sport - in our case football - can be an effective tool for integration, peace and development and help achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
