ERICK THOHIR ON PRE-SEASON, OBJECTIVES, MANCINI AND ICARDI

As the team fly across the Atlantic to begin their US tour, the president spoke exclusively to inter.it

MILAN - Following the team's departure for the United States this afternoon, Erick Thohir spoke to inter.it.

"I'm looking forward to meeting Roberto Mancini and the players again next week," the president began. "I've been keeping an eye on proceedings at the training camp in Brunico and I watched our first two friendlies. I know the players are working very hard to build up fitness levels ahead of a demanding season, which will see us playing on the European stage once again as well as in Serie A and the Coppa Italia.

"Lots of things have been written about Roberto Mancini in Italy. I've been in contact with him over the last few days and I'll be meeting him in the States, but I would like to repeat what I've said on previous occasions and always thought – that Roberto is our star player. It is with his ability and experience that we want to try and improve on last year's league position to qualify for the Champions League and go as far as we possibly can in the Europa League and Coppa Italia.

"The players involved in the Copa America and the Euros will be back in training again soon while Roberto Mancini, the owners and management will keep working to further strengthen our squad.

"There has also been a lot of talk about Mauro Icardi and I'd like to reiterate what our sporting director Piero Ausilio said just a few days ago: Mauro is a major asset for Inter, he's our captain and he is not for sale."
