DANONE NATIONS CUP 2016 AT THE FACCHETTI

Marco Recchia's Inter girls U12s will host the 16th edition of the international youth football tournament on Saturday 14 May

MILAN – Following on from last Saturday’s successful women’s football day at the Centro Sportivo Giacinto Facchetti, where U12 and U13 teams from Inter, Genoa and Atalanta went toe to toe in four friendly matches, the Inter training ground will this weekend host the Danone Nations Cup 2016.

Now in its 16th edition, the prestigious international youth tournament for U12 sides aims to promote sporting values, fair play, respect between opponents and cultural integration.

This year, the FIGC’s Youth Academy and Schools department is assisting in the organisation of the tournament and has allowed young female players from Serie A and B clubs to participate, as part of the association’s aim of furthering the development of the women’s game. Clubs from the women’s semi-professional football league and Elite Soccer Schools who are running women’s football projects are also taking part.

Starting from 10:30 CEST on Saturday, the five teams who qualified for the North-East regional heats from the preliminary stages will do battle for a spot in the national finals. Brescia v Inter and Atalanta v Azalee will kick off proceedings, while Azalee v Verona and Inter v Atalanta will follow at 11:15 CEST.

In the afternoon, Inter are set to take on Azalee at 16:00 CEST before Atalanta v Verona and Brescia v Azalee round the day off at 16:45 CEST.

The highest placed team from each regional heat will advance to the national finals, which will take place as part of the Eight Grassroots Festival scheduled to be held at the Coverciano in Florence on 11 and 12 June.
