SACABA – It was a big day for the Inter Campus Bolivia project on Wednesday 20 April, as a brand-new centre was officially opened in the Entre Rios area of Sacaba.
Launched in collaboration with the United Nations Peace and Development Programme in Bolivia, the city of Sacaba and South Korea’s “Saemaul Undong: Promoting Local Expertise for Production Development” initiative, the centre will accommodate 100 local boys and girls.
It is the latest addition to the Inter Campus Bolivia project, which has been active in nearby Cochabamba since 2008, working in collaboration with the Casari Foundation to provide support to 220 children.
Present at the opening ceremony were resident coordinator of the United Nations programme in Bolivia Mauricio Ramirez Villegas and Sacaba mayor Humberto Sanchez Sanchez, who – alongside Inter Campus representatives and local coordinator Massimo Casari – unveiled the project to locals and presented the children with their black and blue Inter jerseys.
The various partners behind the project have formed a strategic alliance with the aim of promoting the education and social inclusion of children from the Entre Rios area, using the values of sport and play as catalysts to help better their quality of life and improve the area they live in. Key aims include preventing violence, encouraging the development of leadership qualities and promoting gender equality.
The objective of the project is to harness the educational possibilities of football to spark a far-reaching phenomenon of social transformation in the area, working with boys and girls between the ages of six and 13. These will be selected according to social risk criteria.
Through the Inter Campus programme, these youngsters will develop basic physical skills, learn to work as a team, have fun playing football and mature in a positive, constructive environment.
Given that the project’s ultimate goal is to have a positive effect on the community as a whole, local adolescents will take part as assistants to the trainers. Moreover, measures will also be taken to support a group of local women, tasking them with preparing food for the kids after each training session.
