MILAN – Roberto Mancini was critical of his side’s display in front of goal after the 1-1 draw with Carpi on Sunday afternoon.
"We should have scored more goals, but we ended up gifting them a draw," said Mancini, who was speaking to the media after the game. "We completely went to sleep to allow Carpi to make it 1-1 deep into added time. It’s not normal to give that sort of thing away."
"Carpi played the game they needed to play today, but we had the chances to score more than one goal. We had to do that because anything can happen in football. Our defence was in position when they got the equaliser, it’s up front that we absolutely must improve. It’s not good enough anymore – scoring once is not sufficient when you have so many chances. Once we’d gone in front we had two incredible chances in the second half. We need to show our clinical side to put these games to bed, otherwise you can’t achieve anything.
"Strikers need to work hard, get involved in the play, create and finish – we need to improve across the board. We’re creating the chances, but we need to be more intelligent in the way we deal with them and finish them off, otherwise it becomes a problem. Football isn’t just about technique and quality, but brains too.
"When it’s 1-0 the game’s in the balance and with 92 minutes on the clock we should have managed possession better or taken the ball to the corner flag. We need to improve because we can’t throw away everything we’ve done so far."
