PALACIO: "LET'S GET BACK TO THE TOP NEXT YEAR"

El Trenza quick to praise two-goal hero Icardi after Inter's 4-3 final-day victory over Empoli. "Mauro is top-class"

MILAN - There was a hint of disappointment in Rodrigo Palacio's voice after Inter ended the 2015/16 campaign with a 4-3 win over Empoli at the San Siro. El Trenza set the Nerazzurri on the way with the opening goal but he knew he wasn't enough to secure the club European football for next year.

"It's a shame we couldn't get into the Europa League but we gave it our best shot. Now we must look to do better next season," he began.

Palacio's strike partner Mauro Icardi netted two on the night, taking his league tally to 22 and ensuring he ended the year as Serie A's joint top scorer with Luca Toni. "Mauro is a top-class and so is Toni. He just needed one more to claim the title outright."

Looking ahead to next year, Rodrigo said: "Hopefully the club will be able to bring in some top players who can help us get back to challenging for the top spots."
