GENOA – Inter coach Roberto Mancini spoke to the media after his side were beaten by a last-gasp goal in Genoa tonight: "We’ve given it a go until today and thanks to our results we had the chance to qualify for Europe. Today, for example, we played some excellent stuff but committed crazy errors. We can’t rely on scoring three or four goals every time we play.
"If I have to lose, I prefer to do so like we have done tonight – going for it and not just hanging back and waiting for our opponents. It was a spectacular match tonight and we had three glorious opportunities before Kucka’s goal. We kept going right until the end to try and get the three points for Europe.
"We need to work on our defensive errors. We’ve really improved our mentality and the way we take hold of games both home and away, so we can get better at the back too. I can only emphasise that this is a good starting point for next year. After the Sassuolo game, we demonstrated a really attacking, proactive mentality.
"Unfortunately, we’ve not qualified for Europe. It’s a shame for the president and for the fans, who were desperate to get it. The lads have worked very well to change their approach, but we’ve committed too many errors in key matches. My group has been fantastic in the way they’ve worked, so I’m disappointed for them.
"There’s no point in blaming anyone. We’ve really disappointed and demoralised. Blame doesn’t change anything. Our mentality has improved but we’ve made some errors. I believe that with the addition of some great players who have played at the highest level, the existing players will improve too. If you play with Maradona, you raise your game.
"We have a lot of young players here and we need to help them grow and set them up to make as few mistakes as possible. All the players have improved. Hernanes is doing very well, Kovacic still needs to grow but he can play as a central midfielder," declared Mancini.
