MILAN - A charity match to raise funds for child nutrition will be held at the Stadio Meazza on 4 May (kick-off 21:00). The event, entitled Zanetti and Friends Match for Expo Milano 2015, will be an evening of top sporting action and entertainment and is being promoted by the PUPI Foundation in conjunction with Expo Milano 2015 and Milan City Council to celebrate the start of Expo.
Besides Javier Zanetti, the following figures all attended the press conference at Milan's Palazzo Reale: mayor of Milan, Giuliano Pisapia, Marco Bussetti from the city's education office and Expo commissioner Giuseppe Sala.
The match is based on last year's Match for Peace. The aim is to bring the world to Milan and spread the word about child nutrition. Just like Expo.
"It's an honour to be an ambassador for Expo," began Javier Zanetti. "The game on 4 May is a lovely idea. My foundation works in my homeland. But I also wanted to organise something 'at home'. You know that Milan is a big part of my life. And I wanted to play at the San Siro again. I know that this will be a great opportunity. Expo is a huge opportunity that we need to grasp with both hands. We have to give people a warm welcome. It will be very important to share the right values. We want to build a massive chain and I believe that in doing so we can all play our part. Together. I'm sure lots of people will join us because the larger the chain, the more people can help out."
Obviously those in attendance were keen to know who'd be involved: "I've spoken to a lot of people. Walter Zenga, Clarence Seedorf, Andriy Shevchenko, Roberto Baggio, Ivan Cordoba, Carles Puyol, Ryan Giggs and Paolo Maldini are some of the names set to play. There will be a number of people who made history in Milan. Playing at the San Siro is a unique experience."
"Today is a wonderful day for sport, Expo and the city of Milan," said mayor Giuliano Pisapia. "Today we announce a big event which will see football legends and stars of Milan combine. I remember when Zanetti put this idea to me after a nice chat at Palazzo Marino. Once again, Expo is bringing key issues to the table. That's why it's important this event will be held in such a prestigious location in the city. The San Siro is a footballing mecca. I hope this is as successful as the Match for Peace. It will be a great show, sure, but it is also a commitment by young people for young people."
