MANCINI: "WE PLAYED THE RIGHT WAY, BUT IT’S A POOR RESULT"

Speaking after the game, the Nerazzurri coach called on his side to continue their development despite today’s defeat

MILAN – Roberto Mancini declared himself happy with his side’s performance today, despite slipping to defeat thanks to a late header from Moretti: "I think we played the right way today. One failing was that we didn’t create enough movement around their penalty box. Football can be a cruel game, but there’s nothing we can do about it. I think we’re on the right track.

"We went to sleep on their goal. We shouldn’t have gifted them a corner at that stage of the match and then we were poor in our marking of Moretti. But we didn’t deserve to lose or even to draw today – we were always on top against a side that defended all game long. We didn’t create enough chances, because the quality of our attackers just didn’t come out today. But that’s football; I’m disappointed because I thought we deserved to win.

"In terms of third place, it would’ve been good to get off to a better start. Having said that, we just need to roll our sleeves up and work hard because one match doesn’t undo all our good work. We’re finding our feet. We got unlucky with injuries today, because that meant we couldn’t make changes later on.

"I’m satisfied with Podolski’s performance, but like the rest of the forwards he needed to show more movement. Shaqiri didn’t start because he’s still a little way off match fitness. As I said, I expect more from everyone, because we were lacking in the final third today.

"I thought Kuzmanovic had a very good game today. In the future, Brozovic will be able to play in either a two-man or three-man midfield. He’s a good player and can be useful to the team," explained Mancini.
