ROME – "Rudi Garcia’s side have been playing very well ever since last year, and they’ve got some very good players. We knew they were going to cause us problems, but up until a certain point we were right in the game," began Roberto Mancini. "We made some errors and we’ll need to work on that. The defeat doesn’t change our ideas, though. The most important thing now is that we take the positives from this game. We knew it wasn’t going to be perfect straight away, but we need to adapt to the new system quickly. In terms of our defensive display, we allowed Roma to play too much and it’s inevitable that they made us pay, given the quality they have," continued Mancini.
"Guarin? I think his most natural position is as a creative midfielder, but he has to understand when to go it alone and when to move the ball on. Osvaldo played well. Icardi wasn’t dropped – we’re playing every three days so it’s completely normally to rotate two great strikers like those two," said Mancini.
And what of his red card? "I was protesting, sure. But I had a reason to be doing so. You only need to watch the game, but I’m not interested in talking about the referee," explained the Nerazzurri coach.
"We’ll do our level best to get where we want to be. We aim to qualify for the Champions League and we know there are two ways of achieving that. We’re behind in the league, but we can close the gap. This squad has been built to play a different system, so it’s inevitable that there are some teething problems. We don’t have any out-and-out wingers, but the players are doing well to adapt. We’ve now got a month to do what we can, then we’ll see. We need to improve quickly," concluded Mancini.
