MILAN – A perfect penalty from Mauro Icardi gave Inter a deserved win this evening, condemning Sampdoria to their first defeat of the season. Walter Mazzarri was understandably satisfied with the performance when he spoke to Sky Sport Italia after the game: "I think my team put in a great performance in terms of the football we played.
"We’ve beaten a side that had not lost once this season. The only negative is that we couldn’t take more of our chances. Palacio works excellently for the team; he makes so much movement to help his team-mates. At the end of the day, we’ve won. Hopefully we’re saving up the goals for the next match."
Mazzarri was asked about the whistles heard at the end of the first half: "I didn’t hear them; I went straight into the dressing room so that I could think about how the team was doing and what we should do after the break. That’s why I didn’t hear any whistles. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I prefer to let my team and our points tally do the talking.
"We’re happy with how the lads are playing. This is a united group made up of good men. This team feels truly mine," continued the Nerazzurri boss.
Erick Thohir has been at the centre of much criticism this week – does Mazzarri know why? "No, I really don’t. Especially the latest nonsense; and people complain about racism…
"The president came in halfway through my first season here; he saw how I worked and he liked it. Like any good leader, he evaluated the people at his disposal and implemented his ideas accordingly. In my opinion, our club is full of people with very clear ideas," Mazzarri explained.
There was a final word for his team: "I’m sure the players will continue to do me proud."
