MILAN – Walter Mazzarri’s satisfaction at his side’s performance was clear for all to see when he arrived for his post-match interviews this afternoon. He smiled when journalists pointed out the small injury to his left hand: “My hand is doing well. Who knows, if it brings me good luck, I might even break my other hand when this one is back to normal!”
“Jokes aside, this is the type of football I like to see,” he continued. “We were determined and decisive.” In terms of the future, Mazzarri remarked, “Our objective is to always approach matches in this manner. We need to move the ball quickly in order to play our style of football.”
Aside from the seven goals scored today, the midfield demonstrated its extraordinary attacking potency whilst proving that it has grown in terms of defence. This was particularly true of Mateo Kovavic, as Mazzarri explained: “He’s been doing well defensively for some time. Plus, with two strikers laying the ball off for him, he’s been able to get forward and join the attacks. We’ve got two top-quality central midfielders as well as Medel, who was immense. With such a strong holding midfielder we can unleash our creative talents, like we’ve done today.”
“What’s changed from last year? Well, we know each other a lot better now and we’ve got a group of lads who are dying to succeed. I’ve had no trouble motivating them,” he added.
Can the fans dare to dream of the Scudetto? “Well, today they’ve seen us put in a fantastic performance. They know that we’re doing well and I’m sure that they’ll be very happy with how things are going.”
The fans are happy, just like Walter Mazzarri himself. And rightly so, after such a resounding performance from his Nerazzurri.
