MILAN - President Erick Thohir, honorary president Massimo Moratti and everyone at Inter today feel the loss after learning of the passing of Alfredo Di Stefano: footballer, director and extraordinary personality. Over the course of his glorious career Di Stefano was a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, also gathering 22 titles with such teams as River Plate, Millionarios, Real Madrid and the Argentine national team.
Seeing how both clubs share a chapter in their history, facing off in the 1964 European Cup final, at FC Internazionale we would like to send our thoughts to Di Stefano’s family, as well as to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and all Real Madrid fans.
Mario Corso recalled: "I remember that final at the Prater Stadium in Vienna like it was yesterday, against a team we saw as legendary. Before going onto the pitch he was standing right next to me and I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. It was the same for many of my team-mates. I can still hear Luisito Suarez’s saying to Sandro Mazzola, 'Sandro, we’re going out onto the pitch now to play the game, but if you’d like to stay here and stare at Alfredo…' His passing makes me very sad. One of the top three players in the history of the sport has left us."
