SERIE A, HELLAS VERONA 0-2 INTER

Palacio pokes home in the first half to celebrate his contract renewal then Jonathan makes the points safe after the interval

VERONA - Three points and lots of positives to take. That's how we can sum up Inter's 2-0 victory over Verona at the Stadio Bentegodi this evening, as Palacio and Jonathan helped the Nerazzurri temporarily leapfrog Fiorentina into fourth place.

Inter shot out of the blocks at full pelt and within five minutes of kick-off had already rattled the bar through Icardi, Guarin providing the cross. Mazzarri's men took the lead in the 14th minute when Jonathan jigged his way past Albertazzi on the right and drilled a low delivery across the six-yard box to Palacio, who put the icing on his new contract with the easiest of finishes into an open net.

Verona weren't put out by Inter's opener and began to crank up the pressure as the Nerazzurri dropped off a bit. Toni went down in the box after contact with Ranocchia but it was nothing to warrant a penalty and Mr Banti rightly declined to blow his whistle. The first period ended with the visitors a goal to the good.

Ten minutes into the second half Hernanes took a quick free kick from out wide, only to see his curling effort smack against the crossbar. Minutes later a well-worked Inter move ended with Icardi teeing up Guarin, whose attempt flew wide.

It wasn't long before the second goal did come and it was the provider of the first who turned goalscorer himself. Hernanes threaded an inch-perfect ball into the path of Jonathan, who eventually fired into the back of the net with his left after seeing his first two attempts blocked.

Moras was presented with a wonderful opportunity to halve the deficit on 72 minutes but failed to keep his header down from a great position. Handanovic then came to the rescue in added time, clawing away Iturbe's drive before bouncing to his feet to keep out Romulo's follow-up effort.
