MILAN – The final minutes were touch and go for Inter, but in the end they
secured their spot in the Coppa Italia round of 16 by beating Trapani 3-2 at
the San Siro. Their next stop in the competition will be in Udine, as they take
on Francesco Guidolin’s Bianconeri in January at the Stadio Friuli.
But let’s start from the beginning. Mazzarri opted to rotate his squad, choosing Carrizo in goal, and Andreolli, Ranocchia and Juan Jesus in defence. Wallace and Pereira were tasked with working the flanks, as Guarin, Mudingayi and Taider operated in the centre of midfield. Belfodil was fielded as the centre forward, supported by Kovacic.
Inter needed just 4 minutes to open the scoring, when Guarin’s low, driven free kick caught the Trapani keeper by surprise. On 40 minutes the Nerazzurri doubled their lead when Belfodil burned Terlizzi and volleyed home Pereira’s perfect cross. Four minutes later Iunco brought down Guarin from behind in the box, prompting the referee to point to the spot. Taider stepped up and coolly tucked away the penalty. After one minute of injury time added to the first half, Inter entered the dressing room leading 3-0.
In the second half the visitors found their goal when, in the 54th minute, a throw in reached Caccetta in the box before he slotted the ball through Carrizo’s legs. On 90 minutes Trapani added to their tally as Madonia chested the ball down and fired past Carrizo. The final moments were nervy ones for Inter, but they held out to book their spot in the round of 16.
