REGGIO EMILIA - (Football Data) Inter thumped newly promoted Sassuolo 7-0 at Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia with a brace from Milito and goals from Palacio, Taider, Alvarez and Cambiasso, plus an own-goal from Pucino. This was Inter’s biggest away victory in the Serie A since it has been a single-table competition on the day of their 2,700th league match. It is also the third time ever in the single-table Serie A, from 1929/30 to today, that a 7-0 away victory has been registered. The first instance was when Juventus pulled it off at Pro Patria on 10 September 1950 in the 1950/51 season. The second time was Palermo v Udinese on 27 February 2011, costing Rosaneri coach Delio Rossi his job.
The biggest away win ever in the single-table Serie A is a record held by both Padova and AC Milan, each with an 8-0 victory: on 20 November 1949 Padova crushed Venezia in the derby, and the Rossoneri overwhelmed Genoa in the Marassi on 5 June 1955.
Diego Milito also found the net after a seven-month layoff. His last goal
had come on 10 February in the league during Inter 3-1 Chievo, while his last
brace was scored on 3 November 2012 in the Nerazzurri’s stunning victory at the
Juventus Stadium over Antonio Conte’s Bianconeri.
A few
more interesting facts. The last time a team scored 13 goals in their first 4
Serie A games was in the 2002/03 season (AC Milan had the same goal difference
as Mazzarri’s Nerazzurri, 13-1, and finished the season in third place).
Meanwhile, Sassuolo are following in the gloomy footsteps of Serie A newcomers Treviso in 2005/06; the side from Veneto were on 0 points after the first 4 matches and ultimately got relegated.
