REGGIO EMILIA – Inter may have put seven past Sassuolo today, but Walter Mazzarri was keen to say grounded when interviewed by Sky Italia after the match: "What matters most to us is how we play, how much improvement we make, how many mistakes we make. What matters, besides the result, is that we go into games with the right approach and we're doing that very well."
He continued: "Of course we have ambitions, you always do, because you can always keep improving - that's precisely what we're looking to do.
"There are lots of players showing improvement in this team and they have the potential to achieve great things. The main thing is we try to stay fit and keep helping each other. I've got lots of options in this squad."
Asked who he wanted to dedicate such a resounding victory to, Mazzarri replied: "To everyone. We need to protect Inter, each of us within our respective roles. President Moratti spurred us on yesterday and you saw how we repaid him."
The coach later told Mediaset: "It was all downhill after the third goal but I'm more interested in the team's performance than the scoreline, and today we put in a good and solid performance. We went out there and did what we'd planned, and we carried it out as well as possible. My players are following me and they're learning to do everything I ask of them in very little time."
On Milito and president Moratti: "Diego deserves it all, he's a top bloke. As for Moratti, I don't know about before, but I've rarely seen a president so close to the team. He really does care about the players. He wants the lads to show they're proud to be wearing these colours and they've done that.
"Fiorentina? We can't afford any distractions. We're still at the very beginning. Starting tomorrow we must forget this game – well, first take the good things from it and then start preparing thoroughly for the next one."
Mazzarri also spoke to Rai: "Does this send out an important message to Juventus? No, it's an important message to ourselves, but now we must turn our attentions to Fiorentina.
"Good news from Milito? He's a smashing lad, we're thrilled for him. To be totally honest with you, I even felt a bit emotional myself. Things like that are great for the team spirit."
To Radio Rai: "Does the league table look nice? I only look at our work and our growth."
The Nerazzurri coach then continued his analysis in his post-match press conference. "The team seem to be at a higher technical level than before? I've already said that I'll only talk about comparisons with this year. I wasn't here last season and I don't know what went on. What I could see from the outside is that Inter have some tremendously talented players. We can make further strides forward, and the lads know I'm never satisfied.
"On a psychological level, going from Juventus to Sassuolo might have posed a problem but instead they all went out there totally focused on the task. But as I've said, we'll have to see if we can maintain this consistency game by game. How do you adjust your sights on Fiorentina after a result like this? Hopefully the same way we did from after Juventus for today... [smiling].
"Alvarez? He needs exploit every ounce of talent in his body to its full potential."
