THE EARLIEST EVER DERBY D'ITALIA

Previous meetings in September date back to 1938/39 and 1989/90, both played in Milan and won by the Nerazzurri

MILAN - Saturday afternoon's match between Inter and Juventus at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza will be the earliest Derby d'Italia since Serie A has been one league, and the third September meeting in history, following Nerazzurri victories in Milan in the 1938/39 and 1989/90 seasons.

The Serie A calendar has twice seen the Nerazzurri meet the Bianconeri on 17 September. Inter hammered the Old Lady 4-0 in 1939 with a pair of doubles from Frossi (63 and 69) and Guarnieri (67 and 74), while Matthäus and Klinsmann scored in a 2-1 win in 1989 (Marocchi for Juve).

Interestingly, neither side ended up title winners in those seasons: Bologna won the Scudetto in 1939/40, while Napoli were crowned champions in 1989/90.
