NEW JERSEY - Walter Mazzarri analysed the defeat Inter suffered against
Valencia by answering a question that also referenced losses suffered by
other Italian teams, such as Juventus and Napoli, in matches over the last few
days. "In Italy we’re forced to work in this way. You have to choose
whether you want to come off looking good in these important friendlies or if
you want to work very little. Italian teams are struggling? I believe that’s
exactly the reason why. You could see Valencia were much fresher. And then you
have to consider that they played their last match on 27 July, while ours was
three days ago. Right now I favour hard work and I’m looking ahead. A defeat
was something we knew was always a possibility, but perhaps we could have kept
the score line down a bit since you never like losing by that many goals. There
are probably moments when you have to play for pride. If you really want to
look for something positive from the game, when we were down 1-0 we played a
quarter of an hour of some good football. And even today we created some clear
chances, but this gap might also be due to a lack of concentration, which is something
we’ll have to improve," he explained to Inter Channel.
On Ishak Belfodil’s positive performance, the coach continued: "He’s
improving. The first ten minutes were a negative start for us. Our legs were
like cement and he felt it as well. It’s probably my fault for making the team
work too hard. What would I hang on to? After the first goal we were able to
create some good play, but we didn’t know how to put away our chances. We weren’t
lucid there, but that comes back to our overall play."
Now all thoughts are on the match against Juventus, scheduled for 6 August:
"If we manage to recover in time… [smiling] We hope to do the best we can
and use these defeats as a lesson. It’s something I’ve expected from my first
day here, that Inter would become competitive again. We need to try and give
everything, playing in a convincing way. In terms of doing things
automatically we’re improving. It’s certainly not easy for a new coach to start
from scratch."
Finally, on the difference between Inter and Napoli, his last team before
taking over the Nerazzurri, Mazzarri concluded by saying: "Napoli is a
closed chapter now. Last year I had a team I already knew, while here I have to
create a system of play. You can’t compare the two. Now we have to work on our
new season and be ready when it starts. The fact that Juventus and Napoli have
lost some pre-season friendlies? It’s probably because we coaches from the
Italian league know what kind of preparation it requires. Our preparation is
all based on work for the league, and the work will pay off."
