GIOVANISSIMI NAZIONALI, ITALIAN CHAMPIONS!

Benoit Cauet's Nerazzurri side beat Roma 6-5 on penalties, after extra time ended 1-1. It's the second consecutive Scudetto

ABBADIA SAN SALVATORE (Siena) – There were proud celebrations this evening for the triumph of the Giovanissimi Nazionali (U-15), who are champions of Italy for the second year in a row, repeating the success they achieved last year against Napoli.

Last year it was Salvatore Cerrone on the bench, and this season Benoit Cauet guided his boys to the title as they beat Roma on penalties, since regulation and extra-time weren’t enough to determine a winner.

The 70 minutes of regular time ended with the score at 1-1: captain Taufer found the net for the Nerazzurri on 7 minutes and Tumminello equalised for the Giallorossi on 26 minutes. Despite the great chances that fell first to Traore and Piscopo, and then later to Buglio, the match remained deadlocked. Therefore, it came down to spot kicks to decide the outcome after extra time.

The first penalty seemed to spell doom for Inter as the captain Taufer, who had been the best player on the pitch, sent his effort off target. The following Nerazzurri takers all converted, as did those of the Giallorossi, until Scamacca’s decisive kick was saved. Then Piscopo converted for Inter, Nardi shot high, and the Nerazzurri celebrated.

The penalty sequence: Taufer (I) missed; D’Alena (R) goal, Vago (I) goal; Marchizza (R) goal; Buglio (I) goal, Iacuzio (R) goal; Chiarion (I) goal; Argomenti (R) goal; Donnarumma (I) goal; Scamacca (R) saved; Piscopo (I) goal; Nardi (R) missed.

When Nardi missed there was a Nerazzurri explosion of joy as the lads, all born in 1998, celebrated together and embraced coach Cauet.

It’s an important and prestigious title, and the seventh for Inter at this age level; since 1984 no Italian club has won more Giovanissimi titles than Inter.

For Cauet it represents success in his first experience as a coach, and obviously his new career could not have started better. After having won the 1997/98 UEFA Cup as a Nerazzurri player, the French midfielder has once again made history with Inter, guiding his lads to a much deserved Scudetto after a fantastic run.

Congratulations to our Giovanissimi Nazionali!
