PIATRA NEAMT – A love story lasting 800 games, the number Javier Zanetti reached this evening when he took to the pitch for Inter's UEFA Europa League play-off first leg against Vaslui.
Ever more the recordman in Inter's 100-year history, Zanetti makes his 151st appearance in European competitions tonight. Add in 570 Serie A games, 66 Coppa Italia matches and 13 in other competitions (Champions League and Europa League qualifiers, Italian and European Super Cups and Club World Cup) and you get the extraordinary total of 800. An achievement that led to Stramaccioni describing the captain as "bionic".
Over the course of his Nerazzurri career, which began on 27 August 1995 with a 1-0 Serie A victory over Vicenza, Zanetti has won 5 league titles, 4 Coppa Italias, 4 Italian Super Cups, 1 Champions League, 1 Club World Cup and 1 UEFA Cup. 16 trophies in all.
